Welcome To Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement

The mission of Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement is to encourage and promote a safe driving environment through education and safety awareness while enforcing State and Federal laws and regulations, placing special emphasis on commercial vehicles.

A Message From Commissioner Howard

Welcome to the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet's Department of Vehicle Enforcement website, a tool to learn more about Kentucky's commercial vehicle law enforcement agency.

The Department is staffed with both sworn law enforcement officers, regulatory weight and safety inspectors, and civilian staff. When new officers are employed they receive 18 weeks of training at the Department of Criminal Justice Training unless they have already completed this training at an earlier date. Officers and Inspectors also receive an initial 4 weeks of concentrated commercial vehicle law training.

As you navigate through the various sections of our website, you will find information on many of our programs. You can learn more about trucking regulations, compliance reviews, job opportunities, filing a complaint against unsafe commercial motor carriers and information on the Department's national accreditation by CALEA. Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) a voluntary accreditation for law enforcement agencies based on a body of standards internationally accepted by the law enforcement community.

As you will see, our primary mission is to encourage and promote a safe environment through education and safety awareness while enforcing State and Federal laws and regulations, placing special emphasis on commercial vehicles.  This mission is achieved through a combined effort of uniformed officers, special operations officers, canine officers and inspectors who work cooperatively with the Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) industry, other state and local agencies and Kentucky's citizens. Our main objective is to ensure that the motoring public is safe and that CMV's are in compliance with both state and federal laws.
